Way to write Remi!  Remi entered the Chick-fil-a biggest fan contest for the upcoming opening of Chick-fil-a in Morehead City.  She wrote an awesome essay.  Mrs. L will attend the Premier night with her.  Upon receiving permission from Chick-fil-a, she will post her essay for all to read.  WE ARE SO PROUD of our STARFISH this year.   Amazing things continue to happen!

ClassScape…hot or not?

February 23, 2009 at 3:41 pm | Posted in Reader's Workshop | 44 Comments

Hey guys!   I know we are at different places within our ClassScape journeys, but I really want to get some feedback from you.

  • How did you feel about the first ClassScape assessment?
  • Do you like that the info is available for you in egrades but does not count for or against your academic performance in class?
  • How did you feel about our call to class conference today?
  • Did you like having the ClassScape Assessment 1 conference individually with me?  What was beneficial about the conference?  If you haven’t had your ClassScape conference with me yet, what do you hope to gain?
  • Do you like taking the assessment in class and during AC when it is quiet or would you prefer to go to a lab and take it all together?
  • If you could change one thing about ClassScape, what would it be and why?

Congrats to our top scorers from ClassScape Assessment 1: Cooper, Caroline, Haven, and Erika!  Way to show what you know!  I am super proud!

So…as our theme song today indicated “Anything Goes”, tell me what you thought about our sub genre interviews for RDJ 19 on Monday and the Lancaster version of Charades for today’s T2K round 3.  I can’t wait to hear from you.

Recent Additions to ELA Starfish

RPA = Reading Progress Assessment: monitors day to day reading over a period of time.  Students should read everyday as much as possible including time allotted at school and time at home.   We want to continue to grow as readers, which only happens by actually reading on a regular basis.  For the most part, we are doing a good job.  If you (the student) feel behind this week on your day to day reading, make sure you make up for it this weekend.  The first RPA scores will be posted early next week in e-grades.

T2K = Terms to know focus on vocabulary terms all seventh grade students should master.  Each week, we get a new list of focus words where we do class activities.  This first week, we took the Gab Slab Challenge, which was a table competition to complete the list of terms correctly first.  Winners will be announced in class tomorrow, Friday 1-30-09.

As always, students take notes or place handouts in their Reading and Writing Handbooks.  This time of year is a great time for reviewing content already covered.   Currently, we are working on the ins and outs of the subgenres located within the spectrum of fiction and non fiction.  Students should apply what we are learning with examples in their reading dialogue journals as well as their day to day reading.  As a parent, you can help out by asking them questions or getting them to “teach” you the material.

Current book order closes tomorrow, 1-30-09 at 3:30.

4 NEW Links

January 22, 2009 at 8:38 pm | Posted in Teacher Tid-bits, Writer's Workshop | 1 Comment

First, there are three new links you might find useful for review leading into your on-demand writing assessment pilot adventure tomorrow.  They are the features rubric, the conventions rubric, and the writing assessment tips.  Check them out.  Parents, it might help you understand as well.  Of course, if you have questions or comments, post them here.  These three links are located under Writer’s Workshop to the right of the screen.

The fourth new link way surpasses cool.  It is the Study/Homework Help link located under Academic Tools to the right of the screen.  It has instructional videos plus way much more to help with all subjects and is absolutely free.  Check it out.  Enjoy your E-adventure.
