Extra EOG practice

May 13, 2008 at 12:41 pm | In Teacher Tid-bits | 4 Comments

If you would like some extra EOG practice, click on the link below.  There are selections with answer keys.  The best way to use them is to take the assessment by picking the letter choice and provide rationale (why you answered the way you did).  Then follow with checking the answer key trying to see why you missed what you did and if you understand the concept now.  As always, feel free to bring them in for me to review with you.  I would use sample selections from grade 7 and 8.

3rd 9 weeks Exam Study Guide ~ EXAM Thursday 3-20

March 11, 2008 at 8:44 pm | In Teacher Tid-bits | 21 Comments
3rd Nine Weeks Exam Study Tips
Non fiction selection: context clues (words surrounding an unfamiliar word to help you understand the meaning of the unfamiliar word), most interesting about __________, main points, evidence, best explains, best describes, and application of what is read

Poetry Selection: best describes the theme of the poem, appeal to the senses, compare and contrast, context clues, hidden meaning, mood (the way the reader feels while reading and perhaps after), tone (the elements the author uses to create the mood like setting)

Reading and Writing Handbook: the last section will consist of 6 questions, those questions will cover types of non fiction, author’s purpose, propaganda, point of view, and bias

How should I study? Preparing for multiple choice assessments covering reading comprehension skills and concepts presents difficulty with knowing what to study and how.  If you have a test prep book at home or access to a test prep web site, practicing non fiction and poetry selections with multiple choice answers will help.  If you do not have access to a test prep situation, read several types of non fiction articles and poems.  As you read or after you read, review the selection with the skills and concepts listed above.  Share your ideas on the blog of what you did to study and communicate with others on their studying techniques.   If you struggle with reading comprehension multiple choice assessments, you should stay after school this Thursday 3-13 or next Tuesday 3-18 to practice strategies with Mrs. Lancaster and Mrs. Hopkins. For the reading and writing handbook section, you should review your notes.  Reflect on class lessons.  Again, if you have questions or comments, ask, share, and learn!!!!!!!

We have complete confidence you are ready to prove what you learned from our third nine weeks reading and writing workshop adventures.

Wild Writing Ride

March 7, 2008 at 3:22 pm | In Teacher Tid-bits | 1 Comment

We experienced a wild writing ride, which culminated with our North Carolina Writing Assessment this past Tuesday.  We will continue to work on writing and grammatical concepts throughout the year in further preparation for 8th grade expectations.  However, we will shift from a heavy focus on Writer’s Workshop and lighter focus on Reader’s Workshop to a heavier dose of Reader’s Workshop and lighter focus on Writer’s Workshop.  The skinny includes a Non Fiction Exploration and Poetry Passion Extravaganza.  If you have questions about the workshops or anything else concerning English language arts on the Starfish team, feel free to post a comment.

Parents, please scroll down and see the blog concerning invitations.  Invitations went home today and yesterday.

Invitation

February 19, 2008 at 1:15 am | In Teacher Tid-bits | 5 Comments

Parents,

Tuesday or Wednesday of this week, invitations will be sent home with your child.  We are inviting you, yes you, to join in our learning adventure as we take the state challenge assessing previous writing tests and host a seminar discussion concerning our discoveries.  This event will encompass three school days, and you are invited to attend your child’s core class.  Monday, February 25 core 2-4, Tuesday, February 26 all core classes, Wednesday, February 27, all core classes, and Thursday, February 28 core 1 only are the dates.  Core 1 follows a different schedule due to the Spelling Bee on Monday, February 25, at 8:00.  Make plans to attend as you do not want to miss this opportunity to learn more about the North Carolina Writing Assessment which your child will take on Tuesday, March 4, 2008.  You may attend one session or all three depending on the flexibility of your schedule.  Thank you for your support and consideration.

Attention Starfish… cell phone assignment

February 14, 2008 at 11:43 pm | In Teacher Tid-bits | 13 Comments

Students will post their cell phone leads tonight and tomorrow.  Then, you will be able to comment using the Checklist on leads from class today.  You will need to check the blog until you are able to post through Tuesday of next week.

Identifying and Evaluating Leads

Go to the core blog. Post the lead that you and your partner created about cell phone use in school. Remember, this exercise was the warm up from Wednesday’s class. Comment on at least three other students’ leads using the “Checklist for Leads” paper that you received in class today. Identify the type of leads they created and discuss any of the components from the checklist that may be missing from their lead.
